Rather than traditional urban districts, think of the city as a central hub of modern services surrounded by a wide perimeter of archaeological parks. The main attractions are spread across this perimeter, meaning you cannot walk between major stupas; you must travel from the city center outward to specific clusters of ruins.

Arrival and Local Transport

The nearest gateway is SLAF China Bay (TRR). From the airport, the most reliable way to reach the city center is via a pre-arranged taxi or a hired vehicle, as public transit options are limited. Once inside Anuradhapura, the most efficient way to navigate the sprawling archaeological sites is by hiring a three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) for the day. The driver can move you between distant monuments like Jetavanaramaya and Ruwanwelisaya, which are too far apart for pedestrian travel.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

• Underestimating the heat: Many visitors attempt to walk between sites. Instead, use a vehicle and carry significant amounts of water.
• Dress code lapses: These are active religious sites. Visitors often forget that shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering temple grounds.
• Over-scheduling: Trying to see every ruin in one day leads to fatigue. Focus on the primary stupas rather than every minor mound.

Suggested First-Trip Itinerary

For a first visit, prioritize the Sacred City core first. Start with the Ruwanwelisaya and the Sri Maha Bodhi, as these are the spiritual heart of the city. Next, visit Jetavanaramaya to see one of the tallest ancient brick structures in the world. If time permits, take a trip to Mihintale, located outside the main city area, which marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Minor ruins and smaller museums can wait until a second or third day.
