Vessagiri

Vessagiri is the site of an ancient Buddhist forest monastery located among rocky outcrops south of Isurumuniya in Anuradhapura. It was founded under King Devanampiya Tissa and expanded during the reign of King Kashyapa. Visitors go here to see the ruins of a complex that once housed over 500 monks, including meditation cells carved directly into the natural rock formations.

Getting There

The site is located within the ancient city complex of Anuradhapura. It is accessible via tuk-tuk or bicycle from the city centre. The travel time is typically short, usually under 10 minutes depending on the specific starting point within the central area.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and examine the rock-cut cells.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as the site is open and exposed. The dry season is generally preferred for easier navigation of the rocky terrain. The site is typically less crowded than the major stupas in the city.
