Key Transport Modes

Without a metro, Asunción relies entirely on road transit.

  • Ride-Hailing: Bolt and Uber dominate visitor travel. Bolt is especially widespread. Apps offer upfront pricing and bridge the gap between historic downtown and modern Villa Morra.
  • Buses (Colectivos): An extensive network of private routes. Air-conditioned units offer basic comfort, though stops are rarely marked and route maps are scarce.
  • Walking: Best limited to compact pockets like the Costanera. Broken pavements and daytime heat make walking between neighborhoods impractical.

Transit Cards and Fares

Buses are cashless. Riders tap a rechargeable Jaha or Más smart card, sold at kiosks and pharmacies.

  • Worth considering: Extended stays with regular commutes along main avenues.
  • Not suited for: Short-term visitors. Sourcing a card is rarely worthwhile when ride-hailing is so affordable.

Airport Transit from ASU

Silvio Pettirossi Airport sits in Luque, roughly 10 to 15 kilometers northeast of the center.

  • Ride-Hailing: Low effort, moderate cost band, 25 to 40 minutes. The smoothest option for curbside pickups.
  • Official Taxis: Low effort, higher cost band, 25 to 40 minutes. Convenient if arriving without mobile data.
  • Local Bus (Line 30): High effort, lowest cost band, 60 to 80 minutes. Requires a smart card and lacks luggage space.

Practical Transit Notes

  • Rush Hours: Main avenues clog inbound from 07:00 to 09:00 and outbound from 17:00 to 19:30.
  • Last Services: Bus frequencies drop sharply after 20:00. Rely on ride apps at night.
  • Luggage and Accessibility: Turnstiles make buses awkward with luggage. Step-free transit access is minimal.
