Understanding the City Layout
Asunción is divided between its historic riverside core and its newer commercial districts to the east.
- Microcentro: Bordering the Paraguay River, the historic downtown contains landmarks like the Palacio de los López, the Panteón Nacional, and the Casa de la Independencia. It is busy during workday hours but empties out after dark.
- Villa Morra and Carmelitas: Situated east of downtown, these upscale neighborhoods form the modern hub for dining, cafes, and business.
- San Jerónimo: A traditional hillside enclave near the port, known for narrow pedestrian alleys and colorful facades.
Airport Arrival and Getting Around
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) sits northeast of the center in neighboring Luque. Official airport taxis and ride-hailing apps provide the most direct transport into town. For traveling within Asunción, ride-hailing is the most reliable option for visitors; city buses require a prepaid electronic card and do not post clear route maps. Walking is practical inside specific neighborhoods, but traveling between districts requires a vehicle.
What First-Timers Get Wrong
- Searching for evening dining downtown: Microcentro shuts down after business hours. Dinner and nightlife are clustered in Villa Morra and Carmelitas.
- Walking downtown late at night: Historic streets become deserted after dark; use door-to-door rides when traveling at night.
- Ignoring the heat: High daytime temperatures can disrupt outdoor sightseeing. Plan walks for morning and late afternoon.
