Gebel Tingar
Overview
Gebel Tingar is a small hill on the west bank of the Nile, located west of Elephantine in Aswan. In antiquity, it served as a granodiorite quarry and is recognized as the probable source of the stone used to carve the Rosetta Stone. Travellers visit to examine historical quarrying marks, unfinished stone cuts, and remnant blocks in an open desert setting overlooking the river.
Getting There
From central Aswan, take a local ferry or motorboat across the Nile to the west bank. From the landing point, continue on foot or by camel along the desert tracks. The entire journey from the city centre generally takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Visiting Time
Allow 45 minutes to one hour to walk around the hill and inspect the ancient quarry remains.
When to Visit
The site has no shade and is fully exposed to the sun. Plan a visit during the cooler months from October to April, ideally in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. The area rarely sees large tour groups and does not get crowded.
