Wadi el-Hudi

Wadi el-Hudi is a desert valley located southeast of Aswan. It served as an important role in antiquity as an amethyst quarry. Visitors go here to see the physical traces of ancient mining operations and various rock inscriptions left behind by early inhabitants and workers.

Getting There

The site is located outside the main urban area of Aswan. Most travelers reach the wadi by hiring a taxi or a private driver from the city center. The drive typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and the specific starting point.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the quarry sites and view the inscriptions. The time required depends on how much of the valley you intend to walk through.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler winter months, as the desert environment lacks shade and becomes very hot in the summer. Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid peak heat. The site does not typically experience the heavy crowds found at Aswan's primary temple complexes.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location, this site can be combined with other attractions on the west bank of the Nile:

  • Qubbet el-Hawa (1 km)
  • El-Tabia Mosque (1.2 km)
  • Saluga and Ghazal islands (1.5 km)
  • Kitchener's Island (1.5 km)
