Tower of the Winds

Located within the ancient Agora of Athens, this octagonal marble structure served as a meteorological station and timekeeper in antiquity. Visitors go here to see an early example of a clock tower, featuring a wind vane and sundials on its walls that demonstrate how ancient Greeks measured time and wind direction.

Getting There

The tower is situated in the historic center of Athens. From Monastiraki Square, it is a short walk of approximately 5 to 10 minutes. If arriving from the Athens International Airport (ATH), travelers typically take the metro or a taxi to the city center before walking to the site.

Visit Duration

Because the structure is a single monument located within a larger archaeological site, allow 20 to 30 minutes to observe the tower itself. If exploring the surrounding Agora, the total visit will take longer.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as the site is exposed to direct sunlight. The area can get crowded during the peak tourist seasons of spring and summer.
