Pura Luhur
Uluwatu Temple is a Balinese Hindu temple located on the south-western tip of the Bukit Peninsula in Uluwatu, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia. It is the only Balinese sea temple that is also one of the nine directional temples.
What it is
Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on a cliff edge on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, one of the six key temples believed to guard Bali from evil spirits and the only one of these directional temples built directly over the sea. The draw is less the temple structure itself, much of which is closed to non-worshippers, and more the setting: limestone cliffs dropping straight into the Indian Ocean, with long stretches of walking paths along the edge. Many visitors combine the visit with the Kecak fire dance performed at an open-air stage near the temple at sunset.
Getting there
From central Bali (Kuta or Seminyak), it's roughly a 45-60 minute drive by car or scooter, longer from Ubud. There's no direct public transport, so most travelers arrange a private driver, taxi, or rental scooter. Parking is a short walk from the entrance.
How long to spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the cliff walk and temple grounds. If staying for the Kecak dance performance in the evening, budget an extra hour and factor in the wait for a seat.
When to go
Late afternoon works well, arriving with enough daylight to walk the cliffside paths before the sunset crowds build up for the Kecak performance. Midday sun on the exposed cliffs can be intense with little shade. Be aware that macaques live around the temple grounds and are known to grab hats, sunglasses, and phones from visitors.
Combine with
Padang Padang Beach is only 2.7km away and pairs naturally as a stop before or after the temple. Garuda Wisnu Kencana (9.4km) and Pandawa Beach (11.3km) are both within a reasonable drive and can round out a half-day loop around the Bukit Peninsula, while Kuta Beach (15.2km) is a further option if heading back toward central Bali.
