Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque
Overview
Built in 1318 as a royal chapel by a Mamluk sultan, this mosque is situated within the Cairo Citadel. Travellers visit to see 14th-century Mamluk architecture, featuring an open central courtyard and stone arcades.
Getting There
From downtown Cairo, reaching the Citadel by taxi or ride-hailing app takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Taking a taxi directly to the main entrance gate is the simplest option.
Time to Allow
Set aside 30 to 45 minutes to view the courtyard and prayer hall. Additional time is needed if you plan to explore the surrounding fortress grounds.
When to Visit
The cooler months from October to April offer the most comfortable weather for walking around the site. Arriving in the morning helps you avoid mid-day heat. The area gets crowded by late morning when tour groups arrive at the Citadel.
