Cairo Citadel
The Cairo Citadel is a medieval fortress established by Saladin in the 12th century. It served as the residence and seat of government for Egypt's rulers for nearly 700 years. Visitors go here to explore the military architecture and the various mosques and palaces built within its walls, as well as to view the city from its elevated position on a hill.
Getting There
The fortress is located on a hill overlooking the city. From Cairo's city centre, most travellers use taxis or ride-sharing apps. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes.
Duration of Visit
Allow approximately 3 to 5 hours to walk through the grounds and visit the primary internal structures. The site is expansive, and the incline of the hill may slow the pace of exploration.
When to Visit
Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. The site often becomes crowded during peak tourist seasons and weekends. During the summer months, temperatures can be extreme, making morning or late afternoon visits more practical.
