Col di Lana
The Col di Lana is a mountain of the Fanes Group in the Italian Dolomites. The actual peak is called Cima Lana and situated in the municipality of Livinallongo del Col di Lana in the Province of Belluno, Veneto region.
What it is
Col di Lana is a grassy, rounded summit in the Fanes Group, standing apart from the jagged peaks typical of the Dolomites. Its main draw isn't scenery alone but history: the mountain was fought over intensely during the First World War, and its top still holds war memorials, remnants of trenches, and a small commemorative chapel. It's a place for a quiet, reflective walk with open views over the surrounding valleys rather than technical climbing.
Getting there
There's no town center to speak of at Col di Lana itself — most visitors drive up from villages in the Livinallongo del Col di Lana area, such as Pieve or Palla, then continue on foot along marked mountain paths to the summit. The walk to the top typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the starting trailhead and your pace, with a steady but not overly technical climb.
Time to allow
Plan for at least half a day if you're walking up and back down, including time to look around the summit memorials. Add extra time if you want to picnic or explore side trails.
When to go
This is a summer and early autumn destination — snow can linger into late spring, and the paths are not maintained for winter hiking. Go in the morning to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the Dolomites during summer. It does not get heavily crowded compared to more famous Dolomite peaks, making it a calmer option.
Combine it with
Falzarego Pass and Valparola Pass are both about 4.4km away and can be paired with a scenic drive through mountain passes. Lagazuoi Piccolo, 5.1km away, also has WWI history and open ridge views, making it a natural complement. Giau Pass, at 6.3km, is a bit further but worth adding if you have a full day for driving and short walks.
