Arcetri
Arcetri
Arcetri is a residential hillside district just south of central Florence, known less for shops in the conventional sense and more for its quiet lanes, villas, and views back over the city. Travellers usually come up here for the walk itself and for the Arcetri Observatory, near where Galileo spent his final years under house arrest. It's a place to wander rather than to browse — a break from the density of the historic centre.
Getting there
From central Florence, Arcetri sits south of the Arno, uphill from the Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti. It's walkable in around 30-40 minutes from the city centre, mostly uphill on winding streets, or a shorter taxi/bus ride if you'd rather save your legs for the climb itself.
Time to allow
An hour or two is enough to walk through the neighbourhood and take in the views, longer if you're combining it with a visit to the observatory grounds.
When to go
This is not a crowded stop compared with the major sights below in the city, which makes it a good counterpoint to a busy day of sightseeing. Go in the cooler part of the day if visiting in summer, since the walk up is exposed and uphill.

- Arcetri Observatory (0.5km) — right in the neighbourhood, tied to Galileo's later life
- Boboli Gardens (1.2km) — large gardens on the way back down toward the centre
- Palazzo Pitti (1.2km) — adjoining the gardens, a natural next stop
- San Miniato al Monte (1.2km) — another hillside spot with sweeping views over Florence
