Palazzo Pitti
What it is
The Palazzo Pitti is a large Renaissance palace on the south bank of the Arno, built from 1458 as the residence of a Florentine banking family before later becoming the seat of the Medici and other ruling families. Today the complex houses several separate museums, including the Palatine Gallery with its collection of Renaissance paintings, the former royal apartments, and a costume gallery. It's a stop for travelers interested in Florentine art and the history of the city's ruling dynasties, distinct from the Uffizi's more famous painting collection.
Getting there
From the historic center, it's an easy walk: about 10-15 minutes from the Duomo, crossing the Arno via the Ponte Vecchio.
Time to allow
Plan on at least 2-3 hours for the main galleries and apartments. If combining with the Boboli Gardens, allow half a day.
When to go
Like other major Florence sights, it draws large crowds during peak season (spring through early autumn) and around midday. Arriving earlier in the day tends to mean shorter lines and a less crowded experience inside the galleries.

- Santo Spirito — a short 0.3km walk, in the quieter Oltrarno neighborhood.
- Ponte Vecchio — 0.4km away, on the walking route back toward the center.
- Uffizi Gallery — 0.6km away, worth pairing if you have a full day for art in Florence.
