Cairo Citadel

The Cairo Citadel is a fortified complex located on a hill, established by Saladin in 1176. For nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th century, it served as the political center of Egypt and the official residence of its rulers. Visitors go here to explore the military architecture and the various mosques and palaces added by successive dynasties over several centuries.

Getting There

The site is accessible from Cairo city centre via taxi or ride-sharing apps. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 3 to 4 hours to walk through the grounds and visit the primary structures within the walls.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. The site often becomes crowded during peak tourist seasons and weekends. Due to the open layout and elevation, sun protection is necessary during summer months.
