Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan

The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a 14th-century Mamluk complex in Cairo that served as both a congregational mosque and a theological school. Travelers visit this site to study Mamluk architecture, characterized by its massive walls, high portals, and a large open courtyard. It is one of the most significant examples of medieval Islamic construction in Egypt.

The site is located in the historic center of Cairo. From the city center, the most common way to reach the complex is via taxi or ride-sharing apps. Depending on the current traffic conditions in Cairo, the journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the courtyard, examine the masonry, and explore the interior spaces of the madrasa.

When to Visit

Visiting in the early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. The site can become crowded during weekends and public holidays. The cooler months from October to April are generally the most comfortable for outdoor exploration.
