Mosque of Ibn Tulun

Overview

The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is considered the oldest surviving mosque in Cairo, preserving much of its original ninth-century structure. Visitors come to see centuries-old Islamic architecture characterized by a vast open courtyard, pointed brick arches, carved stucco friezes, and an unusual spiral minaret with an exterior staircase.

Getting There

From central Cairo, the site is reachable by taxi or ride-hailing services in roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. If using the metro, the nearest stations require a 15-to-20-minute walk or a brief taxi transfer through the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 45 to 90 minutes. This provides sufficient time to walk through the central courtyard, view the surrounding porticoes, and climb the outer minaret steps for views over the district.

When to Visit

Early morning is ideal to avoid intense midday heat, particularly during the summer months. The expansive layout ensures the site rarely feels crowded. Visitors should avoid Friday midday congregational prayer times when tourist entry may be restricted.
