Pyramid of Menkaure
Overview
The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three major pyramids on the Giza Plateau, built as the tomb for the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Menkaure. Unlike its neighbors, its lower section retains courses of red granite casing blocks. Travellers visit to observe ancient stonework methods and examine the distinct vertical breach on the northern face left by medieval attempts to dismantle the structure.
Getting There
From central Cairo, the site is reachable by taxi, ride-hailing services, or public bus in roughly 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Travellers arriving via Cairo International Airport (CAI) should plan for a 60 to 90 minute drive to reach the plateau.
Time to Spend
Plan for 30 to 45 minutes to walk around the exterior and view the surrounding mortuary temple ruins. If you choose to enter the burial chamber, allow an additional 30 minutes.
When to Visit
The cooler months between October and April are best for walking around the open desert terrain. Arrive early in the morning to avoid high temperatures and heavy crowds from tour buses. The site offers no shade, so sun protection is necessary.
