Hagia Irene

Hagia Irene is an Eastern Orthodox church situated within the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace. Visitors go here to see one of the oldest examples of Byzantine architecture in Istanbul, as it is one of the few churches in the city that was never converted into a mosque.

Getting There

The site is located in the Sultanahmet district, the historic center of Istanbul. From the central tram line (T1), you can walk to the palace grounds in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. If traveling from other ways, the journey time depends on traffic, but the destination is centrally located within the old city.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 45 to 90 minutes to explore the interior of the church and the immediate surrounding courtyard.

When to Visit

Visiting during the early morning helps avoid the larger crowds that gather as the day progresses. Because it is located within a palace complex, it can become crowded during peak tourist seasons. The site is outdoors and indoors, making it accessible throughout the year, though summer months are the busiest.
