About Sultan Ahmed Mosque

Sultan Ahmed Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque, is a working Ottoman-era mosque completed in the early 17th century after roughly seven years of construction. Travellers visit for the interior, where thousands of hand-painted tiles in blue tones cover the walls and domes, along with the building's six minarets and its large courtyard. As an active place of worship, it's still used for daily prayers, which shapes when and how visitors can go inside.

Getting there

The mosque sits in the Sultanahmet district, the heart of Istanbul's old city. From central areas like Taksim or Beyoğlu, the tram (T1 line to the Sultanahmet stop) is the most straightforward option and takes around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and starting point. From Istanbul Airport (IST), allow at least an hour by taxi, metro, or airport shuttle combined with the tram, depending on connections and time of day.

How much time to allow

Most visitors spend 30-60 minutes inside, plus extra time in the courtyard and grounds to take in the exterior and minarets. If you're combining it with nearby sights, plan for a longer stop.

When to go

This is one of the most visited sites in Istanbul, so expect crowds, especially mid-morning through afternoon and during peak tourist season. Arriving early in the day tends to mean shorter lines. Because it's an active mosque, entry may be paused during prayer times, so building in some flexibility helps.

What to combine it with

The mosque sits within easy walking distance of several other major sights. The Great Palace of Constantinople is just 0.1km away, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is about 0.2km, the Basilica Cistern is around 0.3km, and Sokollu Mehmed Pasha I Mosque is roughly 0.4km away. All four can realistically be grouped into a single walking route through the Sultanahmet area.
