The Mosque of Omar

Located in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City, this mosque was completed during the Ayyubid era. It stands directly opposite the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Because it is used exclusively for prayer, it serves as a site of religious practice rather than a general tourist attraction.

Getting There

The mosque is situated within the pedestrian-only zones of the Old City. From the city center, visitors typically enter through one of the city gates and walk through the narrow streets of the Christian Quarter. The walk from the main entry points of the Old City generally takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Time Requirement

Since the site is primarily for prayer and lacks extensive interior touring for the general public, visitors usually spend 15 to 30 minutes observing the exterior and the immediate surroundings.

When to Visit

The area surrounding the mosque is one of the most visited parts of Jerusalem and remains crowded throughout the day. To avoid the largest crowds, arrive in the early morning. Be mindful of prayer times, as the area becomes more congested during these periods.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central location in the Old City, the mosque can be combined with several other sites within walking distance:

  • Church of the Holy Sepulchre: 0.1km
  • Christian Quarter: 0.1km
  • Tower of David: 0.3km
  • Jewish Quarter: 0.3km
