About the Mountains

The Kyrenia Mountains form a narrow ridge running parallel to the northern coast of Cyprus. Travellers visit primarily for hiking routes and elevated views over the Mediterranean Sea. Several historic fortifications stand along the ridgeline, allowing visitors to combine nature walks with visits to hilltop ruins.

Getting There

Access roads and trailheads lie directly south of Kyrenia. Driving or taking a taxi from the city centre to the main mountain passes typically takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on the specific starting trail.

Time to Spend

Allow 2 to 4 hours for a standard walk and viewpoint stops. Hikers planning to cover longer sections of the ridgeline trails should set aside a half day.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn provide comfortable temperatures for walking. Summer days can be hot with limited shade along the ridge, making early morning the best time to hike. Weekends bring more visitors to key access points, while weekdays remain quiet.

What to Combine Nearby

A trip into the hills pairs well with several nearby sights:

  • Bellapais Abbey (2.2 km)
  • Kyrenia Castle (4.7 km)
  • Saint Hilarion Castle (4.9 km)
  • Kyrenia lighthouse (1907) (5 km)
