Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Italy's oldest active shopping arcade and a major landmark of Milan. Housed within a four-story double arcade in the centre of town, the Galleria is named after Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy. It was designed in 1861 and built by architect Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877.
What it is
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a glass-roofed 19th-century shopping arcade linking Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It's worth a stop for the architecture itself — the cross-shaped iron-and-glass structure, mosaic floors, and four-story arcaded facades — as much as for the cafés, shops, and restaurants inside. It functions as a pedestrian passage as much as an attraction, so most visitors walk through it rather than "visit" it in a formal sense.
Getting there
The Galleria sits right in the historic centre, directly beside Milan Cathedral, so if you're already in the area it's a short walk. By metro, the nearest stop is Duomo (lines M1 and M3), a couple of minutes' walk from the entrance.
How much time to allow
Walking end to end takes only a few minutes. Allow 20–30 minutes if you want to look up at the architecture, browse a few shop windows, or stop for a coffee.
When to go
It gets busy through the middle of the day, especially on weekends, since it's a main pedestrian route between the Duomo and La Scala areas. Early morning or later in the evening is quieter and better for photos of the glass dome and mosaics.
Combine it with
- Milan Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo (0.2km) — right at one end of the Galleria.
- Gallerie d'Italia – Milano (0.2km) — an art museum a short walk away, useful if you want an indoor stop nearby.
