Municipio 1: Milan's central district
Municipio 1 is not a single sight but the administrative zone that covers Milan's historic centre — the area most visitors mean when they say "downtown Milan." It contains the Duomo, the Galleria, the main shopping streets, and much of the city's civic and commercial core. There is no ticket or single entrance; you simply spend your time walking through it, and most first-time visitors to Milan will already be inside its boundaries without realizing there's a formal name for the district.
If you're arriving from elsewhere in Milan, the centre is well served by metro (lines M1 and M3 both stop at Duomo) and by tram and bus routes converging on Piazza del Duomo. From Malpensa airport (MXP), the Malpensa Express train runs directly to Cadorna or Centrale station, from which the centre is a short metro ride or 15–20 minute walk. From Linate (LIN), city buses or a taxi reach the centre in roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Because this is a district rather than a single attraction, how long you spend here really depends on what you plan to see inside it — a couple of hours for a walk past the main landmarks, or the better part of a day if you're combining the cathedral, a museum, and shopping.
The area is busiest around Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria in the late morning through early evening, especially on weekends. Early morning is quieter and gives clearer views of the piazza before tour groups arrive.
Everything worth noting is close by: Piazza del Duomo and Milan Cathedral sit at the heart of the district, the Museo del Novecento is about 0.1 km away on the same square, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is roughly 0.2 km off, making it easy to link all four in a single walk.
