piazza del Duomo
Piazza del Duomo is the main piazza of Milan, Italy. It is named after, and dominated by, Milan Cathedral. The piazza marks the center of the city, both in a geographic sense and because of its importance from an artistic, cultural, and social point of view. Rectangular in shape, with an overall area of 17,000 m2, the piazza includes some of the most important buildings of Milan, as well some of the most prestigious commercial activities, and it is by far the foremost tourist attraction of the city.

Piazza del Duomo is Milan's central square, framed by the cathedral, the entrance to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and civic buildings including the Palazzo Reale and Museo del Novecento. It functions as the city's main gathering point, not just a viewpoint for the cathedral, so expect a mix of tourists, commuters, street performers and vendors rather than a quiet monument setting.
Getting there
The square sits at the geographic center of Milan, so it's reachable on foot from most central hotels in 10-20 minutes. By metro, Duomo station (lines M1 and M3) opens directly onto the piazza. From Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) airports, a train or bus into the city center followed by a short walk or one metro stop is the usual route.
How much time to allow
Passing through and taking in the square itself takes 15-30 minutes. Most visitors combine it with entering the cathedral or the Galleria, which extends a visit to two hours or more once queues and security checks are factored in.
When to go
The piazza is busiest in the late morning through afternoon, especially on weekends and during summer. Early morning offers a quieter view of the cathedral facade before crowds and tour groups build up. Be aware the open square offers little shade, which matters in summer heat.
