San Bernardino alle Ossa
What it is
San Bernardino alle Ossa is a church attached to a small ossuary chapel, its walls lined with human skulls and bones set into niches. The main church itself is a fairly conventional Baroque interior, but the ossuary is the reason most people stop in: it's an unusual, slightly unsettling sight rather than a major art destination, and the space is small enough to see in a single visit.
Getting there
The church sits close to Milan's historic centre, within easy walking distance of the Duomo area — figure on 10-15 minutes on foot from Piazza del Duomo. It's also reachable by tram or metro to the nearby city-centre stops if you're coming from further out.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 15-20 minutes here, since the ossuary chapel is small and the church itself doesn't require a long visit.
When to go
The chapel is tiny, so even a handful of visitors can make it feel crowded; going earlier in the day or outside weekend peaks generally means a quieter look at the space. As with any active church, be mindful during services.
