Mount Royal Cross

Overview

The Mount Royal Cross is a large monument standing on the eastern peak of the mountain. Travellers visit to see the structure up close and to take in panoramic views overlooking the eastern part of the island of Montreal.

Getting There

From downtown Montreal, you can take a city bus to Mount Royal Park or hike up via the pedestrian trail and staircase network. The trip from the city centre takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend around 30 to 45 minutes at the site. This allows sufficient time to view the monument, look out over the city, and rest before continuing along the park trails.

When to Visit

Visiting in the evening allows you to see the cross illuminated against the night sky. Summer weekends and clear afternoons are typically crowded, while weekday mornings are quieter. Winter visits require sturdy footwear, as the paths can become icy.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine your visit with several nearby destinations:

  • Mount Royal (0.3km): The surrounding park area features wooded walking trails and open green spaces.
  • Montreal, arts interculturels (0.9km): A multidisciplinary arts centre located down the mountain slope.
  • Hochelaga (1.1km): A historic urban neighbourhood situated to the east.
  • McCord Stewart Museum (1.2km): A museum focused on Canadian and Montreal social history.
