Hòn Tre

What it is

Hòn Tre is the largest island in Nha Trang Bay, covering more than 32.5 square kilometers of hilly, forested terrain off the coast of Khánh Hòa province. Most visitors come for VinWonders Nha Trang, the amusement and water park operated by Vingroup on the island, or for the cable car ride that gets you there. Away from the resort development, the island still has small, undeveloped beaches and two fishing villages, Bích Đầm and Vũng Ngán, where most of the roughly 1,500 year-round residents live — these areas see far fewer tourists than the resort side.

Getting there

The main way to reach Hòn Tre is by cable car from Vinpearl Cable Car Station near Cầu Đá port on the mainland, a short drive south of central Nha Trang. The cable car ride itself takes around 15-20 minutes and crosses open water for part of the route. Boats also run from Cầu Đá to other parts of the island, including the fishing villages, though these serve locals more than tourists.

How much time to allow

If you're visiting for the amusement park and beach facilities, plan on a full day. The cable car ride alone is quick, but the island's main draws are spread out and involve queuing for rides and transport between zones.

When to go

Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays draw large crowds, particularly to the cable car and the park, so weekdays are noticeably calmer. Clear weather matters more here than at most attractions, since the cable car views and beach time are the main appeal — overcast or rainy days reduce the experience considerably.

Combining with nearby sights

Since Hòn Tre sits within Nha Trang Bay (7.2km), it's easy to pair with other bay-area stops. Hòn Đỏ (10km) makes sense as a second island stop on the same trip. Back on the mainland, the Yersin Museum (10.7km) and Christ the King Cathedral (11.3km) are both worth combining with a morning or afternoon in central Nha Trang before or after your island visit.
