Shōren-ji Temple
What it is
Shōren-ji is a small Buddhist temple in Tennōji-ku, part of the Kōyasan Shingon-shū sect. Tradition credits its founding to Prince Shōtoku, the 6th-century regent linked to the early spread of Buddhism in Japan. It's a neighbourhood temple rather than a major pilgrimage site, so travellers usually visit as a quiet stop rather than a destination in itself.
Getting there
The temple sits in central Osaka, within walking distance of Namba and Dōtonbori. From the Namba/Dōtonbori area, it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk east, or a short subway or taxi ride if you'd rather not walk. Coming from Kansai International Airport (KIX), take a train or limousine bus into central Osaka first, then continue on to the temple by local transport.
How much time to allow
Plan for 15-30 minutes. The grounds are modest in size, and most visitors take a brief look at the temple buildings before moving on.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter. Because it's a smaller temple away from the main tourist circuit, it generally doesn't get crowded, making it a low-key stop compared to the busy shopping and dining streets nearby.

Ikukunitama Shrine is just 0.2km away and pairs naturally with a visit here. From there, it's easy to continue on to:
- Nipponbashi (0.7km) - known for its electronics and otaku culture shops

- Namba (1.1km) - a major shopping and transport hub
Together these make for a half-day loop that mixes a quiet temple visit with the busier commercial districts of central Osaka.
