The Byzantine Church of Petra

Located on a hill just north of the Colonnaded Street, this site is a remnant of the Byzantine era. Visitors go here to see the surviving architecture of an early Christian church, which provides a contrast to the more famous Nabataean rock-cut facades found throughout the city.

Getting There

The church is situated within the main archaeological park of Petra. From the center of the city's ruins, it is a short walk north. Depending on your starting point within the valley, it typically takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach the site on foot.

Visit Duration

Most visitors spend approximately 30 to 60 minutes exploring the structure and the surrounding hill area.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. Like most major sites in Petra, this area can get crowded during the peak tourist seasons of spring and autumn. Visiting during these off-peak hours allows for a quieter experience.
