Sarajevo Tunnel
Overview
Built in 1993 during the Siege of Sarajevo, this underground passage ran beneath the airport runway to connect the besieged city with the outside world. Today it operates as an exhibition space where visitors can walk through a preserved section of the tunnel, view wartime photographs, and watch documentary footage detailing life during the blockade.
Getting There
The museum is located near Sarajevo International Airport in the Butmir neighborhood. From the city centre, a taxi ride takes about 25 to 35 minutes. By public transport, take tram 3 to the Ilidža terminus and continue by local bus or a short taxi ride, taking around 45 to 60 minutes in total.
Time to Allow
Plan for 1 to 1.5 hours on site to view the exhibits, watch the introductory film, and walk through the tunnel.
When to Visit
The site gets crowded from mid-morning to early afternoon when tour buses arrive, particularly during the summer season. Visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon offers a quieter experience in the narrow underground space.
