Understanding the Layout of Sigulda

Sigulda borders the steep Gauja River Valley. Think of the area in three main zones:

• Town Center and Station: The flat arrival hub where regional trains and coaches terminate, offering essential amenities.
• Sigulda Castle Quarter: Located a short walk north of the station, home to the medieval Livonian Order ruins and the New Castle.
• The Valley, Krimulda, and Turaida: Across the deep gorge sit Krimulda manor and the Turaida Castle reserve, with Gūtmanis Cave positioned at the valley floor.

Getting from Riga and Moving Around

From Riga International Airport (RIX), take public transit or taxi to Riga Central Station. From there, regional trains and intercity buses reach Sigulda in about one hour.

The town center is easily walkable. To cross the Gauja gorge into Krimulda, you can hike marked trails or ride the aerial cable car. A municipal bus connects Sigulda train station directly with Gūtmanis Cave and Turaida.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

Visitors often assume Sigulda is flat and attempt to walk to every site. Reaching Turaida on foot requires descending into a deep river valley and climbing hundreds of wooden steps, leaving little energy for the return.

Instead, hike one direction through the valley to Turaida, then take the local bus back to the railway station.

A Sensible First Route

Focus your first day on the core historic landmarks. Start at the Sigulda Castle Quarter, cross over to Krimulda, explore Gūtmanis Cave, and finish at Turaida Castle. High-speed adventure rides and peripheral national park trails can wait for a subsequent trip.
