Masjid Abdul Gaffoor
What it is
Masjid Abdul Gaffoor is a working mosque in Little India, built in 1910 to replace an earlier mosque on the same site and named after its founder, Shaik Abdul Gaffoor. It's recognized as a national monument of Singapore, and the main draw for visitors is its architecture: a blend of Islamic and European Neoclassical styles, with an ornate entrance portal and a sundial motif above the doorway inscribed with the names of 25 prophets. It's a good stop for anyone interested in Singapore's religious and colonial-era architecture, or the history of the Indian Muslim community in the area.
Getting there
From the city centre (e.g. Orchard Road or the Downtown Core), it's roughly a 15-20 minute taxi or ride-share trip. By public transport, take the MRT to Little India station on the North East or Downtown Line, then walk a few minutes to Dunlop Street.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes here, mainly to view the exterior and courtyard. As it's an active place of worship, access to interior prayer halls may be limited for non-Muslim visitors.
When to go
Mornings or late afternoons tend to be quieter and cooler for walking around outside. Modest dress is expected when visiting, as with any active mosque. It sits along a busy stretch of Little India, so the surrounding streets can get crowded, particularly on weekends.

The mosque is easy to fold into a wider walk through Little India, just 0.4km away. Masjid Sultan and Masjid Malabar are both about 0.6km away, making it possible to see three distinct mosque architectural styles in one outing. For a change of pace, the Singapore Art Museum is roughly 0.9km away.
