Masjid Malabar
A Different Style of Mosque in Kampong Glam
Masjid Malabar stands out from the older mosques nearby thanks to its blue lapis lazuli-tiled facade and three golden domes, which give it its "Golden Dome" and "Blue Mosque" nicknames. It's the only mosque in Singapore built to serve the city's Malabar Muslim community, who trace their roots to the Malabar Coast of Kerala, India. The current building replaced an older structure on the same site, and its ornate exterior makes it a pleasant stop even if you don't go inside. It sits at the junction of Victoria Street and Jalan Sultan, in the heart of Kampong Glam.
Getting There
From the city centre, it's a short taxi or MRT ride to Bugis MRT station, followed by a walk of about 10-15 minutes through Kampong Glam. Many visitors simply walk over after exploring the Sultan Mosque area, since the two are only 0.4km apart.
How Long to Stay
Most travellers spend 15-20 minutes here, mainly to view and photograph the exterior. Note that as an active place of worship, entry for non-Muslim visitors may be restricted, especially during prayer times, so plan on this being a viewing stop rather than an extended visit.
When to Go
Late afternoon light works well for photographing the golden domes. The mosque is far less crowded than Masjid Sultan, so it makes for a quieter contrast if you're visiting both in the same outing. Avoid prayer times if you want a calmer, unobstructed look at the building.
Combine With
Masjid Malabar pairs naturally with a Kampong Glam walking route: Masjid Sultan (0.4km) and Masjid Abdul Gaffoor (0.6km) are both close by, and Masjid Hajjah Fatimah (0.5km) offers another distinct architectural style. Little India (0.8km) is an easy extension if you want to continue on foot into a different neighborhood.
