Kaštilac

Located in the coastal village of Kaštel Gomilica, this site is a former Benedictine monastery-fortress. It is the only one of the seven castles in the Kaštela region that began as a monastery before being converted into a fortified residence. Visitors go here to see the architectural transition from a religious site to a defensive structure on the Adriatic coast.

Getting There

The site is located east of Split city centre. You can reach it via local bus or taxi. The journey typically takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the grounds and the immediate surrounding village.

When to Visit

The area is most accessible during the spring and summer months. To avoid the midday heat and larger crowds, morning visits are recommended. Like many coastal sites in Croatia, it can become crowded during the peak July and August tourist season.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location in the Kaštela bay, this site can be combined with other nearby fortifications and natural landmarks:

  • Cambi Castle (1km)
  • Vitturi Castle (2km)
  • Mali Kozjak (2.7km)
  • Castle dvorac Rušinac (2.9km)
