Transit Modes That Matter

Stockholm spans fourteen islands, making public transport essential beyond the walkable center.

  • Tunnelbana (Metro): Fastest for crossing water and reaching outer neighborhoods like Södermalm. Three colored lines converge at T-Centralen.
  • Trams and Ferries: Tram 7 runs directly to Djurgården's museum cluster. SL commuter ferries (lines 80 and 82) accept regular transit tickets and offer efficient harbor transit.
  • Buses and Commuter Rail: Buses fill cross-town gaps, while Pendeltåg commuter trains connect outer suburbs.

Tickets and Travelcards

All local transit runs under the SL network. Tap a contactless card or phone at turnstiles for single journeys valid for 75 minutes. Unlimited 24-hour, 72-hour, or 7-day travelcards suit travelers making multiple daily trips across islands. Walkers staying centrally rarely need passes, as single pay-as-you-go fares are more economical.

Arlanda Airport (ARN) to the City

  • Dedicated Express Train: Reaches Central Station nonstop in under twenty minutes. Premium cost band, low effort, easy luggage roll-on.
  • Commuter Rail: Direct 40-minute journey, but requires an airport station barrier fee, putting it in a mid-to-high cost band.
  • Airport Coaches: Take roughly forty-five minutes to Cityterminalen. Budget cost band with luggage storage under the coach.
  • Taxis: Highest cost band for door-to-door convenience, though traffic can delay travel during peak hours.

Practical Advice

Weekday rush hours run 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:00 around T-Centralen. The metro runs all night on Friday and Saturday; weekday services pause around midnight, replaced by night buses. Stations and vehicles offer reliable step-free accessibility via elevators and level boarding.
