Where to stay in Taipei for family travel

Because the MRT reaches almost every sight, families do better picking a calm, well-connected area over chasing proximity to one attraction. Three areas work particularly well.

Taipei Main Station / Zhongshan

This is the transport hub: Red and Blue MRT lines cross here, and the Taoyuan Airport MRT terminates in the same station, so arrival with luggage and children is simple. The area has underground malls and bookstores rather than nightlife, and sits within a few stops of Ximending and the high-speed rail for day trips.

Da'an

Centered on Da'an Forest Park, this is a residential, tree-lined district with playgrounds, cafes, and a slower pace. It sits on the Red Line with easy transfers, close to the Dongmen and Da'an MRT exits, both a short walk from the park.

Xinyi

Home to Taipei 101 and the Elephant Mountain trail, Xinyi mixes malls, wide pedestrian plazas, and green space. The Xinyi Line MRT extension serves it directly, with step-free access at most exits, useful for strollers.

What to check before booking

  • Room configuration: many Taipei hotel rooms are compact; confirm bedding for the number of children, since connecting or quad rooms are limited.
  • Elevator access at the nearest MRT exit, since some older stations still rely on stairs.
  • Distance from the actual MRT entrance, not just the station name, as some exits sit a long walk from the platform.
  • Breakfast or kitchenette options if traveling with young children on an early schedule.

When to visit

Summer school holidays and the Lunar New Year period bring the highest domestic demand, when families travel to hot spring towns like Beitou and coastal areas nearby. Booking ahead matters most during these windows; shoulder months typically offer more availability.
