How should I plan my first trip to Taipei, Taiwan?

How Taipei is laid out

Taipei sits in a basin, organized around districts rather than one center. Zhongzheng, home to Taipei Main Station, is the transport hub. Ximending nearby is pedestrian shopping. Da'an is residential and calm. Xinyi, anchored by Taipei 101, is the newer business district. Wanhua, around Longshan Temple, and Datong, around Dihua Street, hold the older city. Shilin to the north has a well-known night market near the National Palace Museum.

Airport and getting around

Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) connects to the city on the Airport MRT line, ending at Taipei Main Station. Express trains skip stops; local trains stop more often. From Taipei Main Station, the regular MRT reaches almost everywhere else. Get a rechargeable EasyCard on arrival, or use a contactless bank card if supported at the gates — both work on MRT, buses, and many stores. Inside the city, the MRT plus short walks covers most needs; buses fill the gaps.

What first-timers get wrong

• Treating Jiufen, Shifen, or Yehliu as MRT trips — they aren't. Each needs a bus or train beyond the MRT network, so allow extra travel time.
• Skipping Beitou's hot springs as a separate excursion — Xinbeitou is a direct MRT ride from central Taipei, good for a half-day.
• Walking in scooter lanes or crossing against signals — traffic is heavy and doesn't always yield.
• Packing too many districts into one day; distances look short on a map, but each rewards a slower visit.

Shaping a first trip

Start central: Zhongzheng and Ximending orient you to the transport system and are easy to reach from the airport. Add Xinyi for Taipei 101 and Wanhua for Longshan Temple. Da'an and Datong reward a slower pace and can wait. Save Beitou's hot springs for a half-day once settled, and treat Jiufen or Shifen as one dedicated day near the trip's end.
