Kasbah Mosque

Overview

The Kasbah Mosque is a 13th-century religious monument in the Kasbah district of the Medina of Tunis. Built between 1230 and 1233 under the first ruler of the Hafsid dynasty, it served as the principal mosque for Friday prayers. Visitors go to examine its early Hafsid architectural style, distinctive square minaret, and decorative stonework.

Getting There

From central Tunis, the site is accessible on foot by walking west through the Medina towards Place de la Kasbah, taking roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Taxis can drop passengers at the edge of the Kasbah square for a short walk into the pedestrian quarter.

Time to Allow

Allow about 30 to 45 minutes to view the building exterior, the minaret, and the surrounding square.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn offer moderate temperatures for walking. As an active place of worship, avoid prayer times, especially midday on Fridays. The surrounding area tends to be crowded during weekday business hours due to nearby government offices and souks.

Nearby Attractions

The site can be combined with several nearby historic locations:

  • Youssef Dey Mosque: 0.2 km
  • Mosque of Petit Pacha: 0.2 km
  • Ksar Mosque: 0.2 km
  • Dar Hussein: 0.3 km
