Overview

The Blue Grotto is a series of natural sea caves and rock arches located near the fishing harbor of Wied iż-Żurrieq on Malta's southern coast. Travellers visit to view the limestone formations from coastal viewpoints or to take local boat trips into the caverns to see the underwater flora and light reflections.

Getting There

From central Valletta, direct public buses or rental cars reach the site in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Roads lead directly to the parking areas and bus stop above Wied iż-Żurrieq.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 2 hours. This gives enough time to view the main arch from the upper lookout and take a boat ride through the caves.

When to Go

Morning is the most effective time to visit, as morning sunlight enters the caverns directly. Midday often brings heavy tour bus crowds and boarding queues. Boat trips do not operate during rough seas or strong winds.
