Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni
The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni is a prehistoric underground burial complex located in Paola, Malta. Built between approximately 3300 and 3000 BC, it is the only surviving site of its kind. Visitors go here to see an ancient subterranean structure carved directly into the limestone, which served as both a sanctuary and a cemetery.
Getting There
The site is located outside the center of Valletta. To reach it, travelers typically use a taxi or a local bus heading toward Paola. The journey from the city center generally takes between 15 and 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Visit Duration
Due to the strict limits on the number of visitors allowed inside to preserve the site's environment, tours are timed. You should allow approximately one hour for the guided experience inside the complex.
When to Visit
The site is underground and maintains a consistent temperature regardless of the season. However, it is a highly restricted site with very limited daily capacity, meaning it gets crowded and tickets often sell out well in advance. It is advisable to book as early as possible.
