福岡城
Fukuoka Castle
福岡城（ふくおかじょう）は、福岡県福岡市中央区にかつてあった日本の城。江戸時代初期、関ヶ原の戦いで功績のあった黒田長政が、加増・移封で与えられた筑前国那珂郡警固村福崎の丘陵地に築いた。この際に、黒田氏ゆかりの地である備前国福岡（現在の岡山県瀬戸内市長船町福岡）の地名にちなみ福崎を「福岡」と改め、これが近現代の市名・県名にもなった。
Fukuoka Castle
Fukuoka Castle refers to the ruins of a large Edo-period castle built for the daimyō Kuroda Nagamasa in what is now Chūō-ku. The main keep no longer stands, but stone foundations, reconstructed turrets, gates, and long stretches of the original stone walls remain spread across a hilltop site, giving a sense of the castle's original scale. It's a place for walking the grounds and climbing to the former keep site for views over the city, rather than seeing an intact building.
Getting there
The castle sits in central Fukuoka, an easy walk or short subway ride from the city centre; from areas like Tenjin, it's roughly 15-20 minutes on foot or a few minutes by subway to the nearest station, followed by a walk up into the grounds.
Time to allow
Plan for 1 to 2 hours to walk the main paths, ruins, and viewpoints. Add more time if you want to explore the surrounding park areas as well.
When to go
The grounds are especially popular during cherry blossom season, when the paths and viewpoints get crowded. Early morning or late afternoon visits are quieter, and the open, hillside layout means there's little shade, so summer visits are more comfortable outside midday heat.
Combine with
The site sits right next to Kōrokan (0.3km) and Fukuoka Art Museum (0.3km), both easy add-ons. Ōhori Park (0.6km), with its walking paths around the moat-like lake, is a short walk further and pairs naturally with a castle visit. Our Lady of Victory Cathedral (1.3km) is also within walking distance for those wanting to extend the outing.
