Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden
This is a combined zoo and botanical garden dating back to 1953, set inside Minami-koen park in Chūō-ku. It's a straightforward, unpretentious park visit rather than a flashy modern zoo — good for families with young children, or anyone who wants a green, unhurried break from the city. The botanical garden section, with its greenhouses and seasonal plantings, is worth as much time as the animal enclosures.
Getting there
The park sits south of central Fukuoka in Chūō-ku. From Tenjin or Hakata Station, the most practical option is a local bus toward Minami-koen, which takes roughly 20-25 minutes depending on traffic; a taxi covers the same distance faster but at higher cost. There is no subway station right at the entrance, so factor in a short walk from the nearest bus stop.
How much time to allow
Plan for at least half a day if you want to see both the animal enclosures and the botanical garden without rushing — two to three hours is a reasonable minimum, more if you're travelling with children who'll want to linger at each exhibit.
When to go
- Mornings tend to be calmer before school groups and families arrive later in the day.
- Weekends and public holidays draw noticeably larger crowds, especially in cherry blossom season.
- Summer afternoons can be hot and humid with little shade in parts of the park; a spring or autumn visit is more comfortable for walking around outdoors.
What to combine it with
Fukuoka Japan Temple is essentially next door, just 0.1km away, making it an easy add-on before or after your visit. With a bit more time, Fukuoka Castle ruins, the Seinan Gakuin University Biblical Botanical Garden, and the Fukuoka Art Museum are all within about 1.5-1.6km, close enough to link together into a longer half-day loop around this part of Chūō-ku.
