油山
Mount Abura
油山（あぶらやま）は、福岡市城南区・早良区・南区にまたがる山。名は清賀上人が天平年間に正覚寺で椿油を精製したことに由来する。標高597m。近隣には福岡大学、ABURAYAMA FUKUOKAが所在する。
What it is
Mount Abura is a 597-metre hill on the border of Minami, Sawara and Jonan wards, on the southern edge of Fukuoka city. It has no major built attractions or views that stand out on their own — the interest is historical: this is where the Indian Buddhist priest Seiga is said to have first pressed camellia oil from Japanese-grown seeds during the Nara period. The mountain's name, Abura, literally means "oil" in Japanese, a direct reference to that episode. It suits travellers who want a straightforward, low-key hike close to the city rather than a landmark viewpoint.
Getting there
Mount Abura sits south of central Fukuoka. There's no direct rail line to the trailhead, so the practical option is a bus or taxi from Fukuoka city centre toward the Sawara-ku/Minami-ku/Jonan-ku border area, followed by a walk to the base of the trail. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes from central Fukuoka door-to-trailhead, depending on traffic and which side of the mountain you approach from. Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is close to the city centre, so timing to the mountain is similar whether you start from downtown or straight from the airport.
How long to spend
Given the modest elevation, a round-trip hike to the summit and back typically takes a couple of hours, including a short stop at the top. It's a manageable half-day outing rather than a full-day trek.
When to go
Cooler months or the early morning in warmer seasons make for a more comfortable climb, since there's limited shade cover to rely on lower down. This isn't a heavily touristed spot, so crowding isn't a major concern, but trail conditions can get slick after rain given the modest, unpaved paths typical of these Fukuoka hills.
