正覚寺
Shōkaku-ji Temple
油山観音（あぶらやまかんのん）は、福岡県福岡市城南区にある臨済宗東福寺派の寺院。山号は清賀山。本尊は聖観音菩薩。宗教法人名は油山観音（あぶらやまかんのん）。
What it is
Shōkaku-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple set on the slopes of Mount Abura, on the southern edge of Fukuoka city. Locally it's better known as Aburayama Kannon, a name that reflects the Kannon (Bodhisattva of Mercy) devotion practiced here. The draw is less about a single landmark building and more about the setting: temple structures and stone steps set into a wooded hillside, away from the city's usual sightseeing circuit. It's a place for a quiet look at a working temple rather than a major architectural monument.
Getting there
The temple sits in Jōnan-ku, roughly 8-9km south of central Fukuoka (Hakata/Tenjin). By car or taxi, allow around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Public transport involves a bus from the city centre followed by a walk uphill, so a taxi or car is the more practical option if you're short on time.
How long to stay
Most visitors spend 30-60 minutes here, enough to walk the grounds, see the main hall, and take in the wooded surroundings. It's not a large complex, so it works well as a short stop rather than a half-day destination.
When to go
This is a low-key, local temple rather than a tourist hotspot, so heavy crowds aren't a concern. Morning visits tend to be quieter and cooler, especially useful in summer given the uphill approach. Autumn foliage on the mountain slopes can make for a more scenic visit.

- Mount Abura (1.8km) - the temple sits on this mountain, so a hike or walk here pairs naturally with the visit.
- Fukuoka Oriental Ceramics Museum (2.8km) - a reasonable next stop if you're spending a half-day in this part of the city.
