Castel Nuovo
Castel Nuovo
Castel Nuovo, known locally as Maschio Angioino, is a stone fortress on Naples' waterfront that has served as a royal residence for the kings of Naples, Aragon and Spain. The main draw is the exterior itself: five round towers around a courtyard, fronted by a marble triumphal arch built to mark an Aragonese king's entry into the city. Inside, several halls and a chapel are open to visitors, along with a small civic museum holding paintings and sculpture connected to the castle's history.
Getting there
The castle sits on Piazza Municipio in central Naples, an easy walk of 15-20 minutes from the historic centre or Via Toledo. It's also reachable by metro on Line 1 to the Municipio stop, which lets out close to the square.
Time to allow
Plan on 1 to 1.5 hours to see the courtyard, halls and museum without rushing.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons. The courtyard and surrounding piazza are exposed to the sun, so a visit is more comfortable outside the hottest midday hours in summer.
Combine with
- Teatro di San Carlo (0.4km) – one of Italy's historic opera houses
- Galleria Umberto I (0.4km) – a 19th-century glass-domed shopping gallery
- San Giacomo degli Spagnoli (0.4km) – a nearby church
- Church of San Ferdinando (0.4km) – another church within easy walking distance
All four are close enough to pair with the castle in a single walk around Piazza Municipio and Piazza Trieste e Trento.
