Teatro di San Carlo
サン・カルロ劇場 はイタリア・ナポリにある歌劇場で、劇場としてはヨーロッパで現役最古のものである。資金不足のため1874年-1875年のシーズンが中止された以外、定期公演が中止されたことがない点でも特筆される。
What it is
The Teatro di San Carlo is Naples' opera house, opened in 1737 and the oldest continuously operating opera venue in the world, predating La Scala in Milan and La Fenice in Venice. It sits right next to the Royal Palace, and its horseshoe-shaped auditorium with tiered gilded boxes is the main draw even for visitors who don't attend a performance — many houses offer guided tours through the auditorium and backstage areas that let you see the interior up close.
Getting there
It's in the historic centre, a short walk from Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Toledo, so most travellers reach it on foot from anywhere in central Naples within 10-15 minutes. Coming from further afield, the Municipio or Toledo metro stops are both within walking distance of a few minutes.
Time to allow
A guided tour of the theatre typically takes around 30-45 minutes. If you're attending an opera or ballet performance instead, plan for the full evening, including the performance length plus time to arrive early.
When to go
Daytime tours can get busy, particularly around midday and on weekends, so an early tour slot tends to be calmer. If you're going for a performance, arrive well ahead of curtain time, as the surrounding streets and the theatre's entrance area fill up quickly beforehand.
