Piazza del Plebiscito is the main civic square of central Naples, a broad open space paved in dark volcanic stone and edged by two curving colonnades that mirror St. Peter's Square in Rome. It's worth visiting for the setting itself rather than for a single sight: the Royal Palace forms one side, the domed church of San Francesco di Paola faces it across the square, and the whole space is usually free of traffic, giving a clear view of both buildings and the surrounding architecture. It's more of a gathering and passing-through space than a garden, despite how it may be categorized.
Getting there
The square sits right in the historic centre, within walking distance of most central Naples hotels. If you're coming from further out, the funicular lines and metro stops around Via Toledo are the easiest approach, followed by a short walk of a few minutes.
How much time to allow
Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough to walk across, take in the colonnades and the two flanking buildings, and continue on. Allow longer if you plan to also go inside the Royal Palace or the church.
When to go
The square is large and rarely feels overcrowded, but it does fill up during events, concerts, or public celebrations, when it's sometimes used as a venue. Early morning or early evening light works well for photos, and the open pavement offers little shade, so a midday visit in summer can be hot.
What to combine it with
Everything of note is within a couple of minutes' walk: the Royal Palace of Naples and San Francesco di Paola sit directly on the square, Teatro di San Carlo is about 0.2km away, and the Church of San Ferdinando is a similarly short walk. This cluster makes it easy to see several sights in one pass through the centre.
