Certosa di San Martino

サン・マルティーノ修道院

산 마르티노 수도원(이탈리아어: Certosa di San Martino)은 이탈리아 나폴리에 있던 카르투시오회 수도원이다. 현재는 박물관으로 사용되고 있다.

What it is

The Certosa di San Martino is a former Carthusian monastery turned museum, sitting on top of the Vomero hill next to Castel Sant'Elmo. It was inaugurated in 1368 and largely rebuilt in the 17th century under Cosimo Fanzago, whose Baroque work defines the church, cloisters and decorated interiors seen today. The museum inside covers Neapolitan history, art and the tradition of presepi (Nativity scenes), and the site is also worth visiting simply for the views over the Bay of Naples and the city below.

Getting there

From the historic centre, the most common route is the funicular up to Vomero, followed by a short walk to the complex. Total travel time is typically around 20-30 minutes depending on your starting point and funicular line. Taxis are also an option given the hill's steep streets.

Time to allow

Plan for at least 2 hours to see the museum sections, cloisters and church, and longer if you want to linger over the terraces and views.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons. Because much of the visit is outdoors or in unheated stone interiors, very hot midday hours in summer and cold, damp days in winter are less comfortable. Clear days are best for the panoramic terraces, which are a large part of the appeal.

Combine with

  • Castel Sant'Elmo (0.2km) - right next door, with its own city views, easily paired in the same visit.
  • Church of San Ferdinando (0.9km) and Galleria Umberto I (0.9km) - both a walk or short funicular ride downhill into the centre, good for continuing on foot afterward.
  • San Giacomo degli Spagnoli (0.8km) - another nearby stop if continuing through the centre on the same day.

Located near the upper terminus of the Petraio, one of the city's earliest pedestrian connections between upper and lower Naples, the fortress now serves as a museum, exhibition hall, and offices.

Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery in Naples, southern Italy. It is located directly across from the San Carlo opera house. It was built between 1887 and 1890, and was the cornerstone in the decades-long rebuilding of Naples—called the risanamento —that lasted until World War I. It was designed in the Stile Umbertino by Emanuele Rocco, with a dome 57m high at tip of spire, who employed modern architectural elements reminiscent of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. The Galleria was named after Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction. It was meant to combine bu...
