Mercato
Mercato is a neighbourhood or quartiere of Naples, southern Italy. It is in the southeastern part of the city, bounded by the industrial port of Naples on the south.
What Mercato Is
Mercato is one of Naples' oldest quartieri, sitting between the old city centre and the port. Its main draw is the Piazza del Mercato area, a working market square with deep roots in Neapolitan history and layers of everyday city life still visible in its street stalls, small shops, and dense residential blocks. It's a place to see an unpolished, lived-in side of Naples rather than a formal sight with a single ticketed entrance.
Getting There
From the historic centre, Mercato is a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes, depending on your starting point, or a short ride on local buses or the Naples metro toward the port area. Traffic and narrow streets mean walking is often just as fast as taking transport for short hops within this part of the city.
How Much Time to Allow
An hour or two is enough to walk the main square and surrounding streets. If you want to browse market stalls and shops at a slower pace, allow closer to half a day, especially if you're combining it with nearby sights.
When to Go
Mornings tend to be the most active time, when the market and shops are busiest. As with many working-class Naples neighbourhoods, streets can be crowded and chaotic during peak trading hours, and quieter by early evening. Keep an eye on belongings in busy pockets of the market, as is sensible in any dense urban market area.

Mercato sits close to several other sights worth pairing with a visit. Santa Maria del Carmine is just 0.3km away, making it an easy add-on. The Historic Centre of Naples and Castel Capuano are both about 0.9km away, and San Giorgio Maggiore is roughly 1km off — all reachable on foot as part of a single walking route through this side of the city.
