Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum
沖縄県立平和祈念資料館(おきなわけんりつへいわきねんしりょうかん)は2000年4月に糸満市の沖縄戦跡国定公園の平和祈念公園内に開設された博物館。
What it is
This is Okinawa's main museum documenting the 1945 Battle of Okinawa and its aftermath, run by the prefectural government since 1975. Exhibits cover the ground battle, civilian casualties, and the postwar occupation period, largely through photographs, personal testimony, and recovered objects. Outside, the Cornerstone of Peace lists the names of everyone who died in the battle, regardless of nationality, in a series of curved granite walls facing the sea. Most visitors come for both the museum and the memorial grounds together.
Getting there
The museum sits in Itoman, in the far south of the main island, roughly 40-50 minutes by car or taxi from central Naha. Public buses run from Naha to the Peace Memorial Park area, but the trip typically takes over an hour with a transfer, so a rental car is the more practical option for most travelers, especially since several nearby sites are also spread out and best reached by road.
Time to allow
Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours to go through the museum's exhibits at a normal pace, plus extra time to walk the Cornerstone of Peace and the surrounding park grounds, which are extensive.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter; the site can see larger crowds, including school groups, around anniversaries tied to the battle in late June. Because much of the walk between the museum, monument, and park areas is outdoors, summer visits are hot and humid, so bringing water and sun protection is worth it.
Combining with nearby sites
- Okinawa Senseki Quasi-National Park (3.2km) — the broader battlefield park that includes the memorial grounds; easy to pair on the same visit.
- Himeyuri Peace Museum (3.5km) — a shorter drive away, focused on the student nurse corps mobilized during the battle; many visitors combine the two peace museums in one day.
- Gyokusendō (5.3km) — a limestone cave and cultural park, a useful contrast if you want a lighter stop after the museum.
- Ou Island (6km) — a small connected island worth considering if you have a car and want a coastal break.
